Motorcycle Licensing Inspections in Perth
Motorcycle Masters is an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) conducting licensing inspections at our Kewdale workshop. This page explains what you need to know before your appointment.
What is a Licensing Inspection?
A licensing inspection (sometimes called a pit inspection or roadworthy check) may be required by the Western Australian Department of Transport when registering or re-registering a motorcycle. The inspection is carried out at an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) — which is what Motorcycle Masters is.
The purpose of a licensing inspection is to verify that a motorcycle meets the minimum safety and roadworthiness standards required for use on public roads in Western Australia.
When is a Licensing Inspection Required?
You may be required to have a licensing inspection in a number of situations, including:
- Registering a previously unregistered motorcycle
- Re-registering a motorcycle that has been off the road
- Following a direction from the Department of Transport
- After significant modifications have been made to the motorcycle
- In other circumstances as directed by WA licensing authorities
If you're unsure whether your motorcycle requires a licensing inspection, contact the Department of Transport or call us to discuss your situation.
Before Your Licensing Inspection
Arriving prepared gives your motorcycle the best chance of passing first time. Below is a guide to help you prepare. This is not a complete inspection checklist — it is practical preparation advice only.
What to Bring
- Photo identification
- Any relevant Department of Transport paperwork or inspection notice
- Vehicle ownership or transfer documentation, where applicable
- Modification documentation, if the motorcycle has been modified
- Temporary Movement Permit if the motorcycle is unlicensed and must be moved on public roads to reach the workshop
Preparing Your Motorcycle
Before bringing your motorcycle in, check the following:
- The motorcycle starts and runs correctly
- Headlights, brake lights, indicators and number plate light all function correctly
- The horn operates
- Tyres are serviceable and have adequate tread
- Brakes function correctly on both front and rear
- No visible fluid leaks (oil, coolant, brake fluid, fork seals)
- VIN, chassis and engine numbers are clearly visible where required
- The motorcycle is reasonably clean and accessible for inspection
- Any modifications are documented where required
Common Reasons for Inspection Failure
The following are common issues that can lead to a failed inspection or re-inspection. This is not a complete checklist, but it may help you prepare before your appointment.
- Worn or damaged tyres below minimum tread depth
- Faulty or missing lights (headlight, brake light, indicators, number plate light)
- Brake problems — insufficient stopping performance or worn brake pads
- Fluid leaks from engine, cooling system, brakes or fork seals
- Excessive noise from exhaust or mechanical components
- Unapproved or undocumented modifications
- VIN, chassis or engine number identification issues
- Steering, suspension or wheel bearing problems
- Missing or non-compliant reflectors or safety equipment

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a licensing inspection take?
Inspection times vary depending on the motorcycle and what needs to be assessed. Please allow adequate time and confirm the expected duration when booking.
Does my motorcycle need to be registered to come in for an inspection?
No, but if the motorcycle is unregistered and needs to be ridden or transported on public roads to reach the workshop, you may need a Temporary Movement Permit from the Department of Transport. Contact the DoT for current requirements.
What happens if my motorcycle fails the inspection?
If the motorcycle does not pass, we'll explain what issues were identified. In many cases we can carry out the required repairs and arrange a re-inspection. Re-inspection fees may apply.
Do I need to book an appointment?
Yes, licensing inspections are by appointment only. Please call us or send a service enquiry to arrange a time.
Can I get repairs done at Motorcycle Masters before my inspection?
Yes. If your motorcycle needs work to meet inspection requirements, we can carry out those repairs at our workshop. Call us to discuss what's needed.
Inspection services are conducted in accordance with applicable Western Australian Department of Transport requirements. Content on this page is provided as general guidance only. Inspection requirements may change — always confirm current requirements with the Department of Transport. Motorcycle Masters does not guarantee that a motorcycle will pass an inspection.
